Posada Amazonas Lodge is located on the Ese'eja Native Community's territory and is directly adjacent to the 1.5 million hectare Tambopata-National Reserve in southeastern Amazonian Peru. With your English speaking guide you will explore the many trails and observation areas in this pristine Amazonian rainforest. Natural attractions include an oxbow lake with giant river otters, parrot and small macaw clay licks, small monkeys, and hundreds of bird species. The canopy tower provides easy access to one of the world's final biological frontiers: the rain forest canopy. Opportunities for cultural interaction with an Ese'eja: guided activities include ethno botanical walks, visits to small scale farms, and other experiences we are developing in association with our native partners. For those interested in delving more deeply into the Amazonian rainforest you can extend your stay and visit the Tambopata Research Center located in the Tambopata National Reserve.

Posada Amazonas was awarded the 2000 Ecotourism Excellence Award by Conservation International and Conde Nast Traveler Ecotoursim Award in 2000.
Access is simple: fly from Lima or Cuzco on daily scheduled commercial flights to the city of Puerto Maldonado. After a brief stop at our offices we will depart on a 30 minute drive to the Infierno's Community port, followed by 45 minutes boat journey by motorized canoe to Posada Amazonas The lodge is located about 15 minutes walking from the river.

ITINERARY
Day 1
Puerto Maldonado - Posada Amazonas
Upon arrival from Lima or Cuzco, reception and transfer to the Tambopata River port in Puerto Maldonado. Puerto Maldonado is situated at the confluence of the mighty Madre de Dios and Tambopata Rivers and is a bustling, booming tropical frontier town. Its principal activities are gold mining, Brazil nut collecting, timber extraction, agriculture and ecotourism. After a brief stop at our offices we will depart on a 30 minute drive to the Infierno Community port, followed by 45 minutes boat journey by motorized canoe to Posada Amazonas. Depending on the arrival time of the plane we will have a boxed lunch aboard the boats or have lunch upon arrival at Posada Amazonas. During our voyage we may see bird species typical of the river or forest edge such as: Black Skimmer, Pied Lapwing, Capped Heron, Jabiru Stork, Roadside Hawk, and several species of kingfishers, swallows and flycatchers. When we arrive at Posada Amazonas we will unpack and unwind.
Posada Amazonas is a comfortable yet unobtrusive 30 room lodge owned by the Community of Infierno and managed with Rainforest Expeditions. We will receive a short orientation and a complete briefing on the lodge before our afternoon activity: the canopy tower. In this activity, we will visit a 35 meter scaffolding tower that is 15 minutes walking from the lodge. The scaffolding tower is built so that you safely climb using the internal staircase with verandas on each side, and rest in platforms present every 2 meters. From the top you not only get spectacular views of the river and the surrounding forest but also excellent opportunities to observe birds from the canopy including parrots, toucans and macaws. Note: Unless noted otherwise, our guides speak English. We assign guides at 10:1 ratio. This means groups smaller than 10 people will be merged with other groups under one guide. If you would like a private guide or a guide in a language other than English please let us know.
Day 2
Posada Amazonas
We will be up at dawn for a visit to the Tres Chimbadas oxbow lake. After an early breakfast we depart, fifteen minutes from Posada Amazonas by boat and a 30 minute walk take us to the lake shore. From here we take a long, easy canoe ride around it. We will look for giant river otters, turtles, hoatzin, and wading birds. The giant river otters that are seen in Tres Chimbadas belong to a resident family of nine. Then we will return to the lodge and visit the Clay Lick located only twenty minutes from Posada Amazonas. From a blind located about twenty meters away you will see dozens of parrots and parakeets descend on most clear mornings to ingest the clay on a river bank. Species such as Mealy and Yellow- headed Amazon, Blue-headed Parrot and Dusky headed Parakeet descend at this clay lick. The clay lick is most active at dawn and during the late mornings and mid-afternoons.
We return to Posada Amazonas for lunch before embarking on our afternoon outing. In the afternoon we will visit the community's ethno botanical center. From this little shop, the community has been registering the uses of medicinal plants from elders and planting, producing and distributing them for over ten years. We will hike the trails around the center with one of the residents who will explain to us the everyday uses of forest resources in medicine, construction, food and fiber. We will return to Posada Amazonas for dinner and overnight. After enjoying our popular happy hour and refurbishing your spirits with ours, you will be up for an optional night walk to look for amphibians and insects.

Day 3
Posada Amazonas-Puerto Maldonado
After an early breakfast, we depart by boat back to the city of Puerto Maldonado, directly to the airport, in time for our flight back to Lima or Cuzco.

Includes: Programs based on double or triple occupancy. Includes all meals, accommodations and services, all river transportation, and transfer from and to the Airport of Puerto Maldonado.

Boat Transportation: All our boats are 20 foot long, roofed canoes with 55 hp outboard motors. Daily arrivals and departures from every port are scheduled to meet every airline´s arrival and departure with a maximum two hour wait.
