Rishikesh “the place of the sages” is often referred to as the world capital of Yoga. Located on the banks of the sacred Ganga and surrounded on three sides by the Shivalik range of the Himalayas, the area has numerous yoga ashrams and centers dedicated to Vedanta studies. The Hindus venerate the Ganges as the holiest river on earth and along its shores one can witness pilgrims bathing and making offerings.

Our journey begins with a rickshaw ride through a bustling street market, giving us a “taste” of Old Delhi. Later in the afternoon we take part in an Indian cooking class at the residence of a woman chef and that evening we are guests in a private home.

We travel by train north to Hardiwar, the gateway of the Himalaya where we experience northern India from a guesthouse nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas overlooking the holy Ganges, near Rishikesh. Our 6-day retreat includes yoga classes, meditation instruction, time to contemplate the magnificent Himalayas, a visit to an ashram and ample opportunities to discover the area of Rishikesh. For those wishing to visit the TajMahal and Agra an extension can be arranged.

Our retreat is located in the foothills of the Shivalik ranges, nestled in an acre of magnificent mountainside. Its ten comfortably furnished rooms are large, spacious and airy, offer breathtaking views of the splendid surroundings. At 500 feet above the sacred river Ganga, the retreat is a perfect setting for yoga and daily excursions to explore the area of Rishikesh.

Our days begin with an optional meditation session and a yoga class to be followed by a delicious breakfast.   Later in the morning we venture out to explore the area of Rishikesh, the Gateway to the Himalayas, and a renowned religious center on the banks of the sacred Ganges. There is time for short and long hikes to explore the Himalayan landscape and culture. Also, one day we make a trek to the VashishtGufa (cave) where over the centuries some well known sages have meditated.

One evening we make a visit to the sacred river where we join pilgrims in the Ganga Aarti performed at dusk at the Triveni Ghat.   Massages in a traditional massage hut are also available.

Day 1

Arrive in Delhi from US and meet a Mondo Verde Expeditions representative at the airport. Transfer to hotel and overnight at The Claridges.

Day 2

After our early yoga practice and a delicious breakfast, we depart for Old Delhi to explore the bustling markets by rickshaw. The rickshaw ride takes you along the narrow alleys of Chandni Chowk to visit the bridal and the jewelers markets (Silver street). ChandniChowk, once the imperial avenue down which Shah Jehan rode at the head of lavish cavalcades, is today bustling with shops, stalls and silversmiths' ateliers.

In the afternoon, we participate in an Indian cooking class in the home of a woman chef. Later in the afternoon we return to our hotel. Time to prepare for tomorrow’s journey, relax and dinner at the hotel.

Day 3

Delhi - Rishikesh
Morning departure (6:55 am) from Delhi by train to Haridwar (11:20 am). On the train ride you will enjoy a breakfast while taking in the countryside. On arrival you are met at the railway station by a Mondo Verde Expeditions representative and depart on 90-minutes drive to the retreat. Check in at our guesthouse.

Lunch and time to relax. Evening dinner and time for yoga and a briefing.

Day 4

Early morning yoga and meditation. After breakfast we take a short walk to the Vashishth Gufa cave located on the banks of the Ganges. For thousands of years this cave has been the meditation site for great sages. Many manuscripts and books on Hinduism make reference to this cave. Late afternoon yoga. Time for a massage before dinner.

Day 5

Early morning yoga and meditation. We spend the full day at the Parmarth Ashram located between Haridwar and Rishikesh.   Here we take part in a discussion and have the opportunity to observe ashram life. We enjoy a vegetarian lunch at a famous pilgrims’ restaurant in Rishikesh.

In the evening we participate in the Aarti ceremony at the banks of the holy Ganga River. For centuries pilgrims release floating leaf boat lamps on the river while chanting and sending their prayers.

Day 6

Early morning meditation and yoga session.   After breakfast we will take a short walk (45 minutes) to the Kunjapuri Temple. The Temple is located at an altitude of 5,400 feet in the foothills near Rishikesh, offering a panoramic view of the Himalayan peaks to the North and of Rishikesh, Haridwar and the Doon valley to the South. Afternoon yoga and discussion time.

Day 7

After an early breakfast (6:30) we drive 1-hour to begin a beautiful walk to Dashrath Ka Danda providing panoramic views of the high snow mountains of the Himalayas. During our walk we ascend through mixed forests to reach a vantage point of 7,000 feet.  We enjoy a relaxed picnic lunch while we take in the spectacular views of the impressive Himalayas.   We return to our retreat at approximately 5:00 pm.

Difficulty: This is a moderate walk with an altitude gain of 1,500 feet (5,500 feet to 7,000 feet).

Early morning yoga and meditation.   Today we take a short walk to a sacred site.   Afternoon yoga and discussion time.

Day 9

Dehradun – Delhi
Depart on 90-minute drive from our guesthouse to Dehradun Airport. Depart Dehradun by flight to Delhi. Transfer to the International airport for the outbound flight.

Dehradun – Delhi –Agra
Depart on 90-minute drive from Himalayan Retreat to Dehradun Airport. Depart Dehradun by flight to Delhi. On arrival at Delhi pick up by driver and drive to Agra. It takes 03 hrs on Express way. On arrival at Agra, check in to hotel. Evening free for personal activities. Dinner at hotel. Overnight stay at hotel Trident (Deluxe Pool View).

Agra – Delhi
Morning visit Tajmahal & Agra fort with English speaking guide. After Lunch at hotel drive back to Delhi to board flight for home destination.

Altitude will be a factor during this program. Some of the walks will take us up to 7,000 feet above sea level. Participants must be in good physical condition to participate in this Yoga Retreat. Travelers with health conditions such as heart disease and high blood pressure should consult their physician before traveling.
