14 Days

Some of the most beautiful scenery in the world is to be found in the Dolomites

About

Some of the most beautiful scenery in the world is to be found in the Dolomites. We walk in the high mountains and then, at the end of the day, head down to extremely comfortable lodgings in the valleys below. Great views, great food, and we finish in Venice.

Highlights:

  • breathtaking scenery
  • awesome food in mountain rifuggi
  • spectacular walks
  • encounters with local friends
  • arrival by boat in Venice
  • the romantic, melancholic, and stunningly beautiful ‘city on the lagoon’ - Venice herself

Day 1

Overnight flight from USA

Day 2

Arrival in Venice - Bressanone
After arrival in Venice meet Mondo Verde Expeditions LLC at the international airport exit. Trasnfer from Venice to Bressanone located two hundred miles from the Venetian airport. Time to relax before meeting with your guide.   We meet at our hotel in Bressanone (Brixen) in the late afternoon, and, after introductions, enjoy our first dinner together. We have a ‘half-board’ arrangement with the hotel for four of our five nights here, which includes breakfast and dinner at the hotel.  Overnight Bressanone.

Day 3

Mount Plose
Transfer to the Mount Plose cablecar - our walk begins at 2050 metres and gradually ascends to 2336 metres along a wide and extremely panoramic gravel track. We’ll have lunch at the Rifugio Schatzerhütte, before continuing along the same gravel road to a bus stop (a hint for those who might not want to walk any further!). From the bus stop, a short, very steep climb through meadows, leads to a forested track and back to the cable car. Overnight Bressanone.

Day 4

Novacella & Bressanone
We walk directly from the hotel along quiet country lanes and climb briefly through vineyards and apple orchards towards the village of Novacella. We’ll visit the abbey there and then follow a completely flat path back to Bressanone. We’ll visit town and stop at the surprisingly interesting Museo della farmacia (Pharmacy Museum), where they even have some ‘bezoar’ of Harry Potter fame on display!  A free evening for dinner on your own. Overnight Bressanone.

Day 5

Val di Funes
Van transfer to the Val di Funes (1689 meters) for a circular walk under the Odle Mountains. We’ll break for lunch in a mountain rifugio, where the mountain-food, as always, is hearty and filling. Beginning with a long gradual climb on gravel roads, the walk continues on forest trails. After lunch the trail meanders through an ‘enchanted’ forest to a wide gravel track and back to the beginning of the walk. Overnight Bressanone.

Day 6

Passo delle Erbe & Sass Putia
Van transfer to the Passo delle Erbe, to start a walk that circles the spectacular Sass Putia. This walk is the most challenging of the trip and involves a short and very steep climb (2160 meters to 2357 meters) on a rugged stone path to the Putia Pass - an easier option is also available. From the pass, the route follows a gentle mountain track to a wide gravel road, and then circles back to the beginning of the walk. Along the way, we’ll have a picnic followed by coffee and dessert at the Rifugio Vaciara (2113 meters). Dinner together this evening in the excellent restaurant of our hotel. Overnight Bressanone.

Day 7

Brunico
We transfer to the picturesque village of San Vigilio, surrounded by mountains jus off the Val Badia. On the way we’ll stop at one of the area’s famous ‘loden’ factories and then visit Brunico, with free time for lunch and shopping. No walk is planned for today. We dine together at our hotel this evening.  Overnight San Vigilio di Marebbe

Day 8

San Vigilio
Our walk begins uphill through meadows and along quiet country lanes. A traverse takes us through a high mountain pasture before we descend for a delicious lunch in a splendid 16th-century farmhouse. Then, back to San Vigilio, with an optional walk in the hills above town, or a visit to a local producer of traditional fabrics in the afternoon. Dinner at the hotel. Overnight San Vigilio di Marebbe.

Day 9

A Walk in the Mountains
Today, we are in the competent hands our host at the hotel in San Vigilio. He’ll guide on us a made-to-measure walk with a stop for lunch along the way. Dinner at the hotel. Overnight San Vigilio di Marebbe.

Day 10

Corvara
We drive to the town of Corvara this morning, and take a cable car from Corvara to the start of our walk at Col Alt (2000 meters). The views from the high plateau are spectacular, and we’ll lunch in a charming rifugio on our way back down towards town. Later, we transfer by van to our next hotel, where we dine this evening.  Overnight Livinallongo.

Day 11

The Marmolada
This morning we drive to Passo Pordoi (2240 meters) to begin a spectacularly scenic walk 10 km walk, with views of the glacier-covered Marmolada and marmots along the way. We lunch on the terrace of a rifugio before returning to town.  Overnight Livinallongo.

Day 12

To Venice
We leave the Dolomites this morning and head south towards Venice! Leaving our vans at the Venice airport, we’ll take water taxis to our hotel. Driving from Livinallongo should bring us to our hotel in Venice by the early afternoon.  Overnight Venice.

Day 13-14

Venice
We’ll spend two days exploring the back streets and hidden corners of Venice. With time, of course, for some sightseeing of the major monuments, or a day-trip to the islands of Murano & Burano. On our final evening we’ll enjoy a delicious seafood feast at a favorite local osteria. Overnight Venice.

Day 15

Arrivedercì
Our trip together ends this morning. Transfers to the Venice aiport, train station, or extra nights at the hotel can be arranged.
